Tantra: What it is and Where it Goes Wrong.
The word TANTRA means a vehicle to expand.
Authentic tantra is a path to spiritual liberation and enlightenment that was created 7000 years ago as an answer to the rigidity of the Hindu path. Whereas traditional Hindu practice has many rules that everyone follows without really knowing why, the Tantrik paths question everything and experiment to find out what really works: i.e. which practices develop the Siddhi’s (occult powers) most rapidly and effectively. As such, it is known to break rules, but it should be noted that this is not anarchy, but a serious discipline, as once you know what works for you, you fully commit to your path of enlightenment; diligently following all the practices that yield results. It requires a great deal of self-responsibility, as it is up to each individual to discover the best path for themselves. This requires constant self-questioning and seeking to understand everything fully.
As a simple example, when I was in Kalimath (India’s no 1 Tantrapith), one day the pandit asked how I was, and I replied that I was tired, from reciting mantras all day. He replied that I should not feel tired, and went on to explain that the word tapas (austerities) contains the word tap (fire), so each discipline is a way to arouse the inner fire. If I don’t feel that fire, I am not understanding the practice. This simple awareness changed my practice. Rather than following rigid disciplines, I could use which practices awakened my fire. I still followed the disciplines, but tailoring the combination of practices, with awareness, to get the best results. Then I no longer got tired from practice, but felt the fire awaken. This is the kind of awareness we need to bring in to all the tantrik disciplines.
Spiritual Goals vs Modern Misconceptions
The goal of Tantra is to develop the Siddhi’s, or occult powers. This is accompanied by the rising of the kundalini. Many of the practices are for awakening kundalini, and there are series of dikshas (spiritual empowerments) to achieve this faster. There is Candali or Gtummo, which raises kundalini in safe stages, Metaram, which opens and clears the shushumni channel so the kundalini can rise freely without any obstacles, then Ishana Vajra, which is a series of empowerments from Shiva, to develop the upper chakras to a more profound level. The most common misconception about Tantra is that it is all about sex, but this is just one small part of some Tantra schools. It is easy to understand how this misconception arises, as the kundalini first rises from the base chakra, so you experience sexual energy first. It is quite normal in yoga ashrams for students to go around with an erection for days when the kundalini awakens. However, the goal is to let it rise up through all the chakras. If one allows himself to be distracted by the sexual energy, it tends to get dissipated and not rise higher. The most common pitfall is when students get caught up in sexual activity, because it is so enhanced, and simply repeat the first steps, never moving higher. The danger is that the base chakra gets overloaded to a point where it forms vampiric tentacles, taking others power through sexual activity, and closing the path to higher consciousness. To look at them psychically, the chakras are black, and from the base chakra, dark tentacles reach out. This is far from the desired image of bright fiery chakras. The problem is further exaggerated by the fact that getting caught on the base level tends to get the person stuck in ego, so you have would-be Tantra teachers thinking they are so advanced, when they have never even experienced their kundalini rising, nor have they read any of the Tantras. Their egotism leads them to prey on others sexually, feeding off their vital energy and leaving them empty and drained. Their students lose all boundaries and become like prostitutes for the school, eventually being drained of all vital energy until they are empty shells. At this point, they become physically and mentally ill.

Tantra is More Than Sexuality
This is totally the opposite of what Tantra is supposed to achieve. Developing the vital force and raising the kundalini, when done safely with proper discipline, leads to high energy, enthusiasm, creativity, strength and the development of all occult powers. It is also a powerful healing tool, effective in healing physical, mental, emotional and spiritual problems.
Connection to Higher Consciousness
So remember, if you wish to follow the tantrik path, be responsible for yourself; be aware of your energy and what affects it. Stick to whatever raises your energy, and keep away from things that lower it. And most of all, keep strong boundaries. Don’t let anyone make you do anything that doesn’t feel right. A real Tantra master wouldn’t do that. Be open to the Tantrik empowerments that can help accelerate your path, as they can get you where you want to go before you run out of patience.
