Why Astral Projection Fails and How to Make it Work

Many people these days try and fail at astral projection. More and more complex methods come up, yet people work hard at it, fail, and give up. Yes, it was once commonplace for seekers to learn astral projection and master it successfully and reasonably quickly. Why is there such a difference now?

The first obvious difference is the lack of distraction people had. I still witness this in countries that are less developed. Where people don’t have television, social media and all kinds of other entertainments, they have nothing to distract them from spiritual practices. They keep practicing at a relaxed pace, with nothing else to do, so their minds are not distracted, there is no tension in their practice, no pressure or urgency. People tend to master astral projection, as well as other magickal arts, consistently. Let’s have a look at how this is working.

“The biggest block to mastering astral projection and other metaphysical arts in modern society is addiction.”

What allows our natural development is energy dedicated to it, undistracted goals, freedom from tension and anxiety, and absence of addictive behaviours taking energy away from that goal. The biggest block to mastering astral projection and other metaphysical arts in modern society is addiction. Addictions form strong eggregores or larvae which keep compelling you to repeat the same behaviour while feeding off your vital energy. This drains away the metaphysical energy you need to succeed in your practices. Most spiritual people avoid common addictions such as alcohol, food, smoking, porn, etc, but the greatest modern addiction is to the internet, particularly social media.

As the internet robots analyse online activity and respond in a way that draws most user time, social media naturally becomes more and more addictive. It ends up taking a great deal of your energy. Observe how much compulsion you feel to go back to it, keep up on messages, etc, even though they have no real use in your life. This is a strong addiction that devours a lot of your energy. Spiritual practices become secondary to something unimportant. The addiction draws you back to the social media, so you no longer have that easy, natural drive to meditate and do your other spiritual or magickal practices. The mind has been drawn out of its deeper brain waves, and you are no longer in a proper meditative state when you practice.

Practising this regularly will build a positive energy of gratitude that will open doors to attract what you want, as long as you also build value.

The First Step to Success

The first step to success, therefore, is to overcome this addiction: give less time to social media and internet time in general, and more time to meditation. You will soon realise how much of an addiction it is as you keep feeling compelled to go back to it. On a previous short workshop on overcoming bad habits, I gave empowerments for destroying the larvae of addiction. You will need to do this for your social media addiction.

Are You Trying Too Hard?

The second criteria is relaxation. Some techniques just take too much effort. You should try to adapt your practices so they are easier and more relaxed. As an example, one common practice was to imagine pulling yourself up out of the body by climbing a rope. Well, climbing takes effort. We all know what it feels like to fall. Falling out of the body is much easier than climbing out of it. We have also all had the experience of suddenly feeling we are falling as we fall asleep, which often brings us fully awake. So what I did was set up my intention to let myself fall out of my body, then next time I had this falling feeling when falling asleep, I fell through the bed into the living room downstairs, so there I was, out of my body! Try this way, and think of other ways to make any practices effortless. After all, you are entering a dream-like state, which requires theta brain waves. Dreaming is effortless. Effort brings your mind back up towards beta.

Train Your Brainwaves

This brings us to the next point: entraining your brain waves. If you tend to try too hard, rather than relax deeply, or find you have too much tension to go deep in meditation, you can entrain your brain waves to theta by listening to binaural beats. You can find various tracks free on YouTube. It’s good to use them regularly to teach your brain to relax and go deep.

There is one more point I will make to help the shift in consciousness to allow astral projection: the law of Reversal of the Planes. Basically, this means that each plane is somehow reversed from the last, though the reversal may take place along a different axis each time, so various rules work in reverse. As an example, on the physical plane, the preparation is less important than how well you perform in the final act. In magick, the energy put into preparation is more important than the energy put into the final ritual. Time works backwards on the astral plane, as it does in the dream state. Colours can be reversed. Because of this law, it is useful to work with the reversal of time, or with complementary colours. One simple exercise is to remember the events of the day, from end to beginning, before sleeping.

Another tool is work with the Tattwas. These are elemental symbols, made in complimentary colours.

  • Earth is a yellow square against a violet background.
  • Air is a blue circle against an orange background.
  • Water is a white crescent against a black background.
  • Fire is a red triangle against a green background.

The way to work with them is to gaze on the symbol in a good light for a few minutes, then when you close your eyes you will see the colours in reverse, e.g. earth will appear as a violet square against a yellow background. This is the same as looking at the astral form of the symbol.

These simple exercises prepare the mind to shift to the astral plane. Doing plenty of such preparation is more productive than the actual astral projection technique.
